DEMS issues advisory ahead of Easter weekend

City of Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) issues advisory to motorists and community members amid the long weekend.

The City of Ekurhuleni’s Disaster and Emergency Management Services encourages community members to be safe ahead of the Easter weekend.

Road users are encouraged to adhere to speed limits and to be lenient towards other motorists.

All road users’ cars need to be roadworthy and fit for travelling.

Maswati Mdluli of DEMS said buckling up and staying sober is vital while driving.

“We encourage everyone to stay safe this long weekend. Metro police will monitor all conditions on the roads. As people are going to prepare for church services, we advise them to make sure before leaving their properties to switch off their heating appliances, such as stoves, to avoid unforeseen fires,” he said.

He advised church members to avoid flowing rivers and performing baptisms in areas where safety is a concern.

“Drownings are imminent and are on the rise, and cholera is also on the rise. We encourage people who’ll be going to public spaces like parks, that are next to lakes or dams or pools, to be safe. They need to stay away from pools if they’re under the influence of alcohol,” Mdluli said.

He said they expect light rain next Monday and cautioned road users to be safe when they drive from different parts of the country.
