EMPD cautions road users to be vigilant

Be bright, be visible and stay safe. That is the message from the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) to pedestrians, cyclists and joggers.

The EMPD cautions pedestrians, cyclists, and joggers to be more vigilant on the roads because autumn, characterised by more hours of darkness, is here.

The EMPD urged these road users to wear bright or reflective clothing, especially after sunset and before sunrise, to make them more visible to motorists.

“If possible, cross the road at designated places, such as pedestrian crossings or traffic lights. Do not run when crossing the road, and cross only when it is safe. Cyclists must cycle on the side of the road and fit reflective lights to the front and back of their bicycles,” said Lerato Monyane of the EMPD.

If cycling or jogging in a group, she advised locals to have a vehicle escort to alert other motorists of their presence.

She also said locals must never underestimate the speed of a vehicle and must remain vigilant of their surroundings.
