Measles campaign spreads to secluded areas

Parents are urged to sign consent forms to allow their children to be immunised.

The City of Ekurhuleni’s measles campaign is gaining momentum with almost 300 000 children already vaccinated.

The outreach programme is now moving with speed to secluded areas as the city pursues the one million target.

The city will be relying on its mobile clinics to reach as many children in the far-flung areas in an effort to curb the spread of measles in the region.

The campaign started early last month and the deadline has been extended to March 31.

Measles is a very contagious respiratory infection that causes a full-body skin rash and flu-like symptoms.

Parents are encouraged to sign consent forms to give permission for healthcare workers to administer the vaccines to eligible school-going children.

“The city thanks all parents who have co-operated with our health officials thus far, and we appeal to many others to follow suit as we attempt to protect our little ones,” said city spokesperson Zweli Dlamini.
