Ekurhuleni District honours oficers at excellence awards

“The men and women we are honouring today have served their communities with pride, honesty and integrity and they built a good reputation for themselves.”

Ekurhuleni District police members were honoured for performing their duties well between 2021 and 2022 during the Ekurhuleni Excellence Award held at City of Mercy Church (CMC), Katlehong North, on October 26.

SAPS senior managers who attended the event included the Ekurhuleni District commissioner Major General Anna Sithole and deputy commissioner Brigadier Lebohang Machakela.

Also attending were Springs SAPS commander Brigadier Thembeka Gwebushe, Katlehong SAPS commander Brigadier Albertina Vesi, Benoni SAPS commander Brigadier Thabo Mphthi, Ivory Park SAPS commander Brigadier Mbongeni Ncobo, as well as Germiston SAPS commander Brigadier Nkhensani Lemba, Vosloorus SAPS commander Brigadier Ntombizini Thethe, Thembisa SAPS commander Brigadier Roopchawd Soorraj, Brakpan SAPS commander Brigadier Fredl Jonck and SAPS members from various police stations in the district.

Sithole said the event was held to witness and celebrate the awards for the excellent performance of men and women in blue and to recognise employees who have excelled beyond their call of duty.

“The men and women we are honouring today have served their communities with pride, honesty, and integrity and have built a good reputation for themselves,” said Sithole.

Sithole thanked the families of the nominated officers for their continued support.

She congratulated the recipients who received the awards, saying, “Continue to serve your communities with pride and excel even more in your different fields of work, despite the difficult circumstances we are working under and where police are brutally killed by criminals.”

The founder of CMC, pastor Tom Mofukeng, said they appreciated the SAPS for hosting the event in the township instead of the suburbs.

He said the community appreciates seeing police visibility and hosting the event locally makes them feel like they are part of the community.

“Sometimes the only time we see a police officer is when we are in trouble. When you see a policeman or woman become a part of the community we appreciate it. You are fathers, mothers, husbands, wives, brothers and sisters to somebody and I wish you all the best,” said Mofukeng.

Lieutenant Colonel Mosima Manganyi, the first runner-up in the admin support employee of the year level eight to 12 category, said she is honoured and grateful for winning the award.

She said being the overall winner among all the stations in the district is a huge achievement.

Runner-up in the admin support employee of the year level five to seven category, Rose Ramphele, said she is overwhelmed and honoured.

She said every police officer has to restore the public’s confidence in the SAPS.

“I work as a data typist. I still serve the public because if you love your work, even as a data typist, you still work for the public,” she continued.

“People come to request information on their case. I always answer them with smiles and assist with everything they need. It encourages me to mentor other junior police officers and to serve our community diligently.”
