WATCH: Stampede at Katlehong pub wreaks havoc

According to Mniza, the event saw attendance from a large number of people, but no one died inside the premises.

A disheartening video showing a stampede at a Katlehong pub and grill has made waves on social media platforms.

Seen in the video is a large group of people forcing their way into the premises of Hurricane Lifestyle (HL) Pub and Grill, located at Nota Street, Phake Section, Katlehong.

The incident occurred during an ‘all black vs all white’ event hosted by LastBorn on September 3.

It was followed by reports suggesting that four girls died on that night. Katlehong North SAPS spokesperson Sergeant Sbusiso Mazibuko confirmed that the station has not received any reports of murder about the stampede incident that occurred at Hurricane Lifestyle. Mazibuko said SAPS can only confirm the cases of assault that were reported that night.

“At the moment, a case of murder has not been reported, however, if the community has information that police can investigate they are welcome to share it with the SAPS,” said Mazibuko.

He further encouraged event organisers to apply when hosting events, for police to be present as this will help prevent criminal activities during the event.

Kathorus MAIL visited HL to engage with the owner of the venue, but the owner was not available.

However, we spoke to an employee who only shared his stage name Mniza. He said he assists with the sound system at the venue.

According to Mniza, the event saw attendance from many people, but no one died inside the premises.
He said there were a lot of people who were still waiting outside to enter the premises and they were uncertain if they all had tickets.

“Even if you had 30 security personnel it would still be difficult to control them, when we opened the gate people started pushing each other,” said Mniza.

“You must understand that these people are drunk and carrying cooler boxes that contain alcohol inside. As they push each other some of them fall on top of bottles.

“But nobody died here even cases of assault did not happen inside the premises. The only challenge was that people sustained injuries because of the force they used to enter. Some of them were jumping the fence. Why would you do that if you have purchased a ticket that grants you access to the venue?”

Another man who claimed to have attended the event, reiterated that no one was killed, citing that he did not hear any gunshots on the night.

“The problem was that there were a lot of people and the venue was too small for the number of people who were here.”

DM Management replied on behalf of event organiser LastBorn noting that their client is not in a position to comment on rumours made by the public.

“It was a great show where artists and his fans pulled up, hence we see no reason for him to comment on this further, except to thank those who came out in numbers to the show. He sends his love to all those who continue to support him and his brand.”
