The Imagine Church joined hands with BP Southern Africa and SA Harvest to feed 800 people from the Jackson informal settlement on July 22.

With the help of Imagine Church, SA Harvest and BP South Africa visited the church campus, located in the Jackson informal settlement in the South of Joburg to do their 67 Minutes for Madiba.

A total of 800 people were fed during the day.

Sunshine Matiso from Imagine Church said: “During lockdown, we discovered the government was going to hand out food parcels but the people from Jackson informal settlement had no way of contacting the government about getting these parcels. That’s why we opened our church’s doors to help the people register for the parcels.

“We sent all the information to the Department of Social Development and it was a privilege to have someone from the department help just the residents of Jackson. It was during this time that we met up with SA Harvest, who along with their partners treated the residents every day.”

CEO for BP Southern Africa Taelo Mojapelo said: “It was a heart-warming experience to work with my colleagues at BP to make a difference in the community. As we were driving through Jackson informal settlement we saw the community is quite impoverished and we are sure that there are a few people that go to bed hungry every night.

We hope today will put lots of smiles on everyone’s faces.”

BP has recently announced a partnership with SA Harvest in honour of Nelson Mandela’s legacy of preserving and upholding human dignity.

Everyone was given an apron as a keep sake while processing food.

“As the official fuel partner, BP Southern Africa will fuel SA Harvest’s food delivery vehicles, empowering the organisation to deliver 55 million meals over the next three years of the partnership,” said Nelisiwe Masina, spokesperson for BP Southern Africa.

“We stand in support of SA Harvest’s union against hunger and have allocated days in which we can actively help in our immediate communities. Our three-year partnership with SA Harvest allows us to rally other investors that will make it possible for greater education and access to food security. We look forward to fueling the nation with this partnership, in more ways than one,” said Mojapelo.

The team of BP Southern Africa has called the month of July ‘Million Meals Month’ and concluded the month of giving back to the community on July 29 in Johannesburg and Cape Town.
