Joburg South boxer positive despite defeat

After outstanding boxing action in Sandton, Paul Kamanga guarantees a great comeback, following a slight setback.

Johannesburg South’s rising star, Paul Kamanga, is preparing for his next big step in the boxing fraternity following a nail-biting fight at the Galleria in Sandton.

On June 30, the Glenvista boxer had a comeback fight on South African soil after six years of fighting abroad.

Despite giving his best and fighting for the welterweight division, Kamanga succumbed to defeat as he went against Jabulani Makhense in the ring. However, despite his loss, the fervent fighter has his head held high and is adamant he will make a great comeback.

He went head-to-head with Makhense in an eight-rounder. As the fight proceeded, the towel was thrown in the fifth round.

“A new camp with Manny Fernandez, who unfortunately was not available on fight night as he was out of the country, was equally represented in my corner by great trainers Anton Girlmore and Gert. My shape on fight night was a bit sluggish and shaky,” he said.

Kamanga said credit must be given to his opponent Makhense who was well-prepared and took on the fight.

“My corner threw in the towel in the fifth round and registered my first loss in African soil after 21 fights – a big wake up call. For now, we are going back to the drawing board and see the way forward. I will come back stronger,” he explained.

During the fight, he said he was not hurt and felt he could still carry on.

“We had a bit of an argument with my trainers because I felt I could have fought on. At the moment no fights are planned,” said Kamanga.

He thanked Big Bom Lollipops and Nexus travel for sponsoring him on his journey.

Kamanga also thanked NGL logistics for supporting his charity drives.
