Vosloorus stakeholders bring career expo for youth

Local entrepreneurs also got an opportunity to showcase their work.

Vosloorus SAPS and the Ward 44 committee partnered with various stakeholders to stage a career expo as part of commemorating Youth Day.

The event was held at Lesedi Shopping Centre, Vosloorus, on June 16.

The event started with an awareness campaign to highlight GBV, and drug and alcohol abuse. It was followed by a march.

Young stars along with police members led the march from Vosloorus Police Station to LSC wearing their school uniforms.

Those who participated held placards to send a message to encourage men to protect women.

Ward 44’s head of the youth sector and one of the organisers, Tisetso Santos, said their goal was to empower the youth to make decisions regarding their future.

“We wanted to have a different approach to celebrating Youth Day in the township. We know that our youth is distressed at the high unemployment rate.”

SAPS provincial junior commissioner Sipho Kubheka (17) questioned what the current youth is doing with their education.

“If the youth of 1976 fought for better education, what are you doing with your education? Where do you want to be in the next 10 years?” said Kubheka.

He challenged the youth to fight for their future.

Event organisers and the SAPS representatives.

“Let us change our mindset and not view June 16 as merely a time of enjoyment. Start seeing June 16 as a path to prosperity and securing yourself.”

Doctor Boitumelo Theepe from Clinix Botshelong-Empilweni Private Hospital shared her story to motivate young stars.

She said the youth doubt themselves adding that she was raised by a pensioner yet managed to attend high school at Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls and furthered her studies at Stellenbosch University through a bursary.

“Ever since I was young I always knew that I want to be a doctor. Living with my grandmother we did not have much at home but I never took that as an excuse to say I cannot be a doctor because I knew that this is what I wanted,” said Theepe.

She encouraged youth to apply for bursaries to further their studies citing that if they do not show up they won’t get there.

Other stakeholders included Boston College, The Pledge, Mentec Foundation, CPF, SAPS, Boksburg Correctional Services, Vosloorus Green Door and GBV Brigades.

Local entrepreneurs also got an opportunity to showcase their work.
