DoH heads a successful child protection week campaign in Katlehong

The campaign aims to raise awareness of the need to protect children from abuse.

The Department of Health (DoH), along with various stakeholders, embarked on a five-kilometre walk, in Katlehong, on June 3, to raise awareness for Child Protection Week, which ran from May 27 to June 4.

According to DoH’s social worker Nokwanda Thembela, based at Ramokonopi Clinic, the campaign aims to raise awareness of the need to protect children from abuse, neglect and exploitation, including strategies for prevention, intervention and treatment.

The five-kilometre walk started from Little Dolphin Crèche to Ramokonopi Police Station.

“Children from the crèche also took part in the walk, sending a message to the community urging them to be part of the solution in protecting children from abuse,” said Thembela.

Stakeholders that formed part of the event included the DoH’s mental health social workers, clinical psychologists, nurses from Ramokonopi Clinic and their health promotion team and Skeem GP Foundation.

Child protection agencies, like Childline, Teddy Bear, One Family One Child and Tshepong Stimulation Centre also participated.

She said stakeholders shared information on the services they render to children in need of care and protection, while the SAPS conducted a presentation on the role of SAPS in matters relating to child abuse.
