Wildfires had Simmer and Jack Landfill Site temporarily closed

The fire at the Simmer and Jack waste site is being put out by the City of Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Services.

City of Ekurhuleni’s DEMS personnel battles a fire at the Simmer and Jack Landfill Site since May 15.

Until further notice, the facility will be closed, and clients are recommended to use alternative dumpsites and landfill sites such as the Weltevreden landfill site in Brakpan, Platkop near Heidelberg, and Rietfontein landfill site in KwaThema.

There have been no recorded property damage or fatalities.

The fire is contained to the garbage body at the landfill’s operating face, and city officials are working round the clock to extinguish it.

The cause of the fire is unknown and still being investigated.

The city apologised for any inconvenience caused.
