Siblings to represent Gauteng at national basketball champs

Ofentse was selected to play for the u-15 team and Tshiamo will play for the u-14's.

Tshiamo and Ofentse Mogapi were elected to play for the Gauteng basketball team at the upcoming National Schools Sport Championships in their respective age groups.

Ofentse was selected to play for the u-15 team and Tshiamo will play for the u-14’s.

They attend practise sessions at the Germiston Stadium under coach Seaparo Ramaube of the Germiston City Basketball Club.

“This is an indication that our hard work is recognised,” said Ofentse.

“I attended trials at Wits University and played to the best of my ability. I played hard, not only to impress the coaches but to play the game the way it’s supposed to be played,” said Ofentse.

“I was first nominated for the top 20 then again drafted to the top 12. The 12 players make the Gauteng squad. This is a huge accomplishment and I have been working hard towards this.

“Since I started playing basketball at the age of 10, I played as a point guard. I also play for my high school which is Germiston,” said Ofentse.

He said what he loves about basketball is discipline and the fun that comes with being on the court.

“Besides basketball, I do rowing at school. Lakers is my favourite team and the late Kobe Bryant is my inspiration. He is the reason why I fell in love with basketball,” said Ofentse.

After his matric, he would like to study towards becoming a software developer.

During his free time, he trains with his sister Tshiamo to refine their skills.

Tshiamo played for Ekurhuleni District at the OR Tambo Soncini Games last year to qualify for the Gauteng team.
She said it is a privilege to be part of the provincial team at the same time as her brother.

“Our family supports us to the fullest. They encourage us to keep going,” said Tshiamo.

“Our discipline and dedication paid off and I would encourage other players to start taking the sport seriously so they see the fruits of their labour,” said Tshiamo.

Tshiamo hopes to one day play for the Golden Warriors while Ofentse has his eyes set to play for the Lakers at the NBA.

Coach Ramaube wished them success in their play and said he hopes that they get to represent South Africa against other countries.
