Blue lights matter delayed by defense unavailability

The Palm Ridge Specialised Crimes Court postponed the multimillion police blue lights corruption case to March 11 due to the unavailability of one of the accused's legal counsel.

The matter appeared before the court on February 17. The matter will proceed for the court to hear arguments for the alleged unreasonable delay application.

The accused in the matter are former acting national police commissioner Khomotso Phahlane, former deputy national commissioner Bonang Mgwenya, former Gauteng police commissioner Deliwe de Lange, Gauteng deputy police commissioner Nombhuruza Lettie Napo, Lt-Gen Ramahlapi Johannes Mokwena (retired divisional commissioner), Brig James Ramanjalum, Col Thomas Dumas Marima and Sgt Maetapese Joseph Mulaiwa.

The civilians accused are Judy Rose, Samantha Andrews and Vimpie Manthatha, the owner of Instrumentation for Traffic Law enforcement (Pty) Ltd.

The group faces charges of corruption, fraud, theft and money laundering.

The matter relates to a contract to supply emergency warning equipment for SAPS in 2016.

The contract was worth R191-million. However, R65-m was paid to the service provider Instrumentation for Traffic Law enforcement (Pty) Ltd.

A further payment of R22-m was stopped as a result of the investigation into the matter by the Investigating Directorate and IPID.
