Katlehong North SAPS welcomes new station commander

“Our challenges are contact crimes, like assault, GBV, robberies, mob justice and trio crimes like carjacking.”

Col Nomathandazo Victoria Gumbi was appointed the new station commander of Katlehong North SAPS on January 1.

Gumbi previously held the office of Vispol commander at the station. Her promotion follows Col Buthelezi’s move to Orange Farm SAPS after he was promoted to brigadier.

The newly appointed station commander said she will ensure the police will continue their role of serving the community.

Gumbi started her career in the SAPS in 1994 as a constable at Thokoza SAPS.

“I was integrated into the SAPS in 1999 after completing my training at Pretoria Training College. I was sent to Duduza SAPS as part of field training,” said Gumbi.

She was then deployed to Reiger Park SAPS as a constable after completing her field training.

“Two years later, I was promoted to the sergeant rank and in 2004, I was promoted to inspector, which is today known as warrant officer, working in the crime-prevention unit,” she said.

Gumbi moved to Vosloorus SAPS in 2004. During her five years in Vosloorus, she worked at the client service centre, the court as an admin liaison officer and as a detective in 2009.

“In 2010, I was promoted to the captain rank and moved to Hillbrow SAPS as the relief commander. In 2014, I was promoted to a major rank. I occupied the Vispol commander office at Parkview SAPS,” she said.

Gumbi joined Katlehong North SAPS in 2016 still as the Vispol commander.

She received accolades during her time as the Vispol commander at Katlehong North SAPS.

Gumbi was awarded a certificate for the Best Zone Visible Policing of the Year 2018/19 and another certificate for the first runner-up for Best Zone Component of the Year 2018/19.

“I am proud and happy about my achievement because I worked hard,” said Gumbi.

Having worked with the community of Katlehong for five years, Gumbi said she knows the challenges affecting the community regarding crime.

“Our challenges are contact crimes, like assault, GBV, robberies, mob justice and trio crimes, like carjacking,” she explained.

“Contact crimes are mainly at shebeens, so we visit legal shebeens to monitor compliance, while we close illegal ones,” said Gumbi.

Col Nomathandazo Victoria Gumbi showed off the accolades she got during 2018/19, while she was still the Vispol commander at Katlehong North SAPS.

The station commander explained another challenge in the community is drugs.

She also noted people from other policing precincts who need help complain that services at her station are slow.

“While we prioritise our local residents, we also have to accommodate people from other areas; hence, we are sometimes overwhelmed.

“What I often do when cases like these occur is called the station commander of the station where the client was denied services to ask them to call their staff to order because it affects us as well.

“My door is always open to help the community,” said Gumbi.
