WATCH: Fighting among learners at Glenvista High a great concern

Three videos have recently surfaced on social media where learners from Glenvista High School were fighting on the school's premises.

A group of concerned parents approached the CHRONICLE about the incident and said they now fear for the safety of their children at the school.

One parent spoke to the CHRONICLE on the condition that he stays anonymous and said, “As a parent, I’m deeply disturbed and concerned about the recent incident at the school. This is not the first incident and the year has only begun.

“There are no teachers on the ground during breaks to enforce discipline. The principal has nothing to say when questions are raised. It’s as if she lacks the skill to enforce discipline.

“Something needs to be done before there is a serious injury or fatality. This is a real-life horror movie.”

Another parent also spoke to the CHRONICLE on the condition that she stays anonymous.

She said, “My daughter is afraid to go to school. What action can be taken? We need urgent intervention and strong leadership. Someone that can stand up to these children and say this is how the school will be run and adhere to the rules.

“I think immediate expelling of these learners has to be implemented. We need a principal who can take a stand against these juveniles.”

The CHRONICLE approached Glenvista High for comment on the matter and the school referred the CHRONICLE to the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) as the matter is being investigated.

Steve Mabona, spokesperson for GDE, said, “The department is aware of only one fight involving three learners, which occurred on January 31. Preliminary investigations reveal that educators promptly intervened and stopped the fight.

“All parents of the implicated learners were immediately summoned to the school on the said day. Furthermore, the SGB will institute an internal disciplinary hearing against the perpetrators.

“We will continue to monitor the situation at the school and intervene accordingly.”

The group of parents are still waiting for an appointment with the SGB to discuss the way forward after these incidents.

In the past week, more incidents were reported at the school with the DA paying a visit to the School on Monday, February 7 and a meeting with parents on Monday evening.

This is a developing story and the CHRONICLE will keep our readers informed.
