Suspect arrested for about R20k in counterfeit money

REACT-24 recently nabbed a suspect in possession of counterfeit money of about R20 000 in Mayberry Park.

A suspect found to have counterfeit money of about R20 000 was recently arrested in Mayberry Park by REACT-24 and was handed over to Brackendowns SAPS.

Following his arrest, he made a run for it down to Port Elizabeth, officially renamed Gqeberha, skipping his court appearance.

However, he was later rearrested in Gqeberha with the help of other law enforcers and will soon be handed over back to local SAPS to face his charges.

According to Garfield Venter of REACT-24, the suspect faces multiple charges of fraud, assault and other related charges.

“We at REACT-24 did not give up. We used all our resources available to track and find him. With the help of Gqeberha SAPS and a security company down there, we managed to find and arrest him. To all involved, a job well done. Special thanks to WO Nes from Brackendowns SAPS,” he said.

Here’s how to spot counterfeits:

• You will feel the difference in the texture of the R200 note.

• The colour is also a lot brighter.

• A watermark formed within the paper. When held up to the light, the image is visible and will not produce on colour copiers.

• A security thread is woven into the paper. On the front, it appears a silvery stripe. When held up to direct light, it appears as a continuous line on which the letters SARB can be seen.

• The latest design features and technologies are constantly monitored and applied where applicable.

• Hold your banknote up to direct light and you will see its safety features.
