ECW student Mbali’s murderer is still at large

Gauteng SAPS provincial spokesperson Kay Makhubela confirmed that the culprit has not been arrested.

The Hlongwane family is disappointed by the police not being able to trace the murderer of its late 20-year-old daughter Mbali Hlongwane, who was stabbed and killed outside the Ekurhuleni West College (EWC) on October 21.

Mandla Hlongwane, Mbali’s uncle, told Kathorus MAIL that the last update they received from the police was in December last year when the Gauteng SAPS provincial spokesperson, Kay Makhubela, visited the family to request a photograph of the suspect.

“They sent Makhubela to request the photo of the suspect as they wanted to circulate it on the media so that the community can help identify the suspect, other than that, we never heard from them again,” said Mandla.

Mbali was an IT student at EWC. According to students, she was killed by her classmate after she qualified to write exams for all her modules.

She was stabbed five times and sustained two stab wounds on her chest, one under her left armpit, neck and back. She was taken by ambulance to Thelle Mogoerane Reginal Hospital where she died approximately 20 minutes after she was admitted.

Katlehong family fights for justice for its late daughter

It has been over three months since the murder of Mbali. Her case was reported at Katlehong North SAPS and later taken over by the Gauteng provincial SAPS.

The slow-paced investigation by police led to a march by the family along with EWC students and community members to Katlehong North SAPS on November 13, demanding answers. To date, nothing has materialised on the case.

Makhubela confirmed that the culprit has not been arrested.

“There are no arrests yet, we are following all possible leads,” he said.
