Local artist and NPOs spoil senior citizens with lunch

Other stakeholders included Sikhusele Mama Center for Abuse Women and Children, Dawn Park Green Door, CPF and Senzakwenzeke Traditional Committee.

Local musician Monochrome partnered with various NPOs and stakeholders to give back to the community by hosting lunch for senior citizens and to educate them, at Dawn Park Green Door, on December 12.

The purpose of the event was to appreciate and teach elderly citizens about gender-based violence (GBV) and areas to report if they come across such abuse.

Other stakeholders included Sikhusele Mama Centre for Abuse Women and Children (SMCAWC), Dawn Park Green Door, CPF and Senzakwenzeke Traditional Committee.

Ambassador of SMCAWC Thandi Njoko said funding women’s full participation in civil society to deal with GBV is part of the vital steps to curbing the GBV pandemic.

Njoko said women who are active in civil society can be highly effective in influencing global, regional and national treaties, agreements and laws and in exerting pressure to ensure their implementation.

More money needs to flow toward supporting women’s active participation in civil society, to scale up prevention efforts that address unequal gender power relations as the root cause of GBV.

“Some programmes have effectively structured participatory activities that guide the examination of gender norms and their relationship to power inequities, violence and other harmful behaviours.

“They work with multiple stakeholders across the socio-ecological spectrum and across multiple sectors. But we need to do a better job of evaluating these programs so we can move them from limited, small-scale pilots to larger-scale, societal-change programmes,” said Njoko.

She said there is a lack of trained professionals to work with children who have experienced GBV, especially when the perpetrators are parents or other family members.
