Police arrested three alleged car hijackers following a shoot-out between the four suspects and Katlehong SAPS Crime Prevention Unit (CPU) at Zanele Street, Siluma View, Katlehong, on the night of December 15.

Among the three arrested, two suspects sustained gun wounds during the shoot-out. They were taken by ambulance to Thelle Mogoerane Hospital. One of the wounded suspects died on the morning of December 16.

The third suspect was arrested without injuries while the fourth suspect escaped arrest.

According to Ekurhuleni district communications officer Capt Neldah Sekgobela, members of the CPU were patrolling next to Sam Ntuli Mall when they received a message to look out for a white Nissan Almera, which was reported hijacked in Meyerton.

Sekgobela said the members came across the said motor vehicle driving next to Sakhile Section.

They chased the vehicle moving to Siluma View, Zanele Street in Katlehong where the shoot-out between the police and the suspects occurred.

“Three suspects were arrested, two suspects were wounded and one ran away,” said Sekgobela.

The police recovered the hijacked vehicle and a toy gun on the scene.

The suspects will appear at Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court on charges of attempted murder, possession of hijacked motor vehicle and possession of a toy gun.

In a separate incident on the same night, police arrested three suspects for the possession of three unlicensed firearms and ammunition at Buyafuthi Hostel, Katlehong.

According to Sekgobela, the members of highway patrol were following intelligent information about possible armed suspects at the hostel.

“Upon arrival at the address, three unlicensed firearms and rounds of ammunition were recovered and the three suspects were arrested,” said Sekgobela.
