Katlehong North SAPS shares money saftey tips

Never make your bank visits known, even to people close to you.

It is that time of the year again, the time tinsel, Christmas trees, flickering fairy lights and Jingle Bells, but it is also shopping season for criminals.

Not only do they target businesses and banks, but they also target members of the public who walk to and from banks with large amounts of cash.

Katlehong North SAPS Capt Lesetja Mathobela compiled safety tips to remind customers to be aware of their surroundings when going to the bank, shopping and depositing or withdrawing cash.

Safety tips

• Carry as little cash as possible.

• Consider using cellphone banking or internet transfers or facilities provided by the ATM to do your banking.

• Consider the convenience of paying your accounts electronically.

• Refrain from making cash deposits of club members’ contributions on high-risk days.

• Arrange for the club’s pay-out to be electronically transferred into each club member’s personal account or accounts of their choice.

• Stokvel saving clubs or burial societies can arrange for members to deposit cash directly into the club’s accounts instead of collecting cash contributions.

• Never make your bank visits known, even to people close to you.

• Do not openly display the money you are depositing while you are standing in the queue at the bank.

Report any suspicious criminal activities by contacting Katlehong North SAPS on 073 546 7446 or the Crime Stop line on 080 011 1213.
