Thokoza SAPS walk to raise GBV awareness

He appealed to residents to do what they can to protect the future of women and children.

Thokoza SAPS held a gender-based violence (GBV) awareness campaign on November 20 at the station.

The awareness campaign started with a walk from the police station to Mpilisweni, Serena and Khumalo streets and back again.

All stakeholders who participated in the walk were the SAPS, EMPD, the Department of Health, Helping Hands, Men’s Forum, CPF patrollers, GBV brigades, Sanco, Universal Church, youth desk, Powa, Nicri Qhakaza Mbali Yesizwe Group and Kofifi Girls.

Speakers all emphasised working together to fight GBV.

According to Thokoza SAPS media liaison officer Capt Buyisile Mvelase, during the event men and women were urged to refrain from any form of crime against women and children.

Mvelase urged women and children to break the silence against domestic violence.

Sr Moepye from Phola Park Clinic said domestic violence affects everyone and any form of violence against women and children is a direct violation of human rights.

She mentioned that our community every year is being robbed of future stars because of domestic violence.
A representative from Men’s Forum Past Noko called on the men to help hold each other accountable for the attitude, unconscious behaviour and direct action that contribute to GBV.

Thokoza SAPS acting station commander Lt-Col Dube condemned GBV crimes.

“We may not know the victims, but they are our responsibility,” said Dube.

He appealed to residents to do what they can to protect the future of women and children.
