New mayoral committee ready to go

“My multi-party mayoral committee’s combined institutional knowledge and skill set will map the way forward, and everything we do will be in the best interest of the communities of Ekurhuleni.”

Mayor Tania Campbell announced the City of Ekurhuleni’s newly appointed mayoral committee members on Saturday.

“After careful consideration and broad consultation with our coalition partners, I am confident that the individuals appointed today will usher in a new era of service delivery and accountability in the City of Ekurhuleni,” she said.

“The 10-member mayoral committee is ready to go. While we are fully aware of the challenges and the mammoth task ahead, these capable individuals all share the same like-minded goal, and that is getting services to the communities, making sure that our budget is pro-poor and efficiently utilised, and rooting out the scourge of fraud and corruption in Ekurhuleni.

“Together, we have committed to every single resident and every single business in Ekurhuleni that during this five-year term of office, we will be focused on building a capable, service delivery driven city that will reposition Ekurhuleni as the economic hub of Gauteng.

“My multi-party mayoral committee’s combined institutional knowledge and skill set will map the way forward, and everything we do will be in the best interest of the communities of Ekurhuleni.

“This multi-party democracy is the future, and we owe it to every resident who placed their trust in us to ensure we deliver a responsive and accountable government that takes Ekurhuleni forward.”

The mayoral committee has been established in line with the current structure of departments within the City.

The new members are as follows:

• MMC in charge of Finance: Clr Graham Gersbach from the Democratic Alliance

• MMC in charge of Health and Social Development: Clr Letta Charlotte Zitha from Action SA

• MMC in charge of Transport Planning: Ald Alco Ngobese from the Inkatha Freedom Party

• MMC in charge of Water, Sanitation and Energy: Clr Senzi Sibeko from the Democratic Alliance

• MMC in charge of Infrastructure Services: Clr Themba Kalipa from the Congress of the People

• MMC in charge of Corporate and Shared Services: Clr Ruhan Robinson from the Democratic Alliance

• MMC in charge of Human Settlements: Clr Mabekenyane Thamahane from the Democratic Alliance

• MMC in charge of City Planning: Ald Heather Hart from the Democratic Alliance

• MMC in charge of Environment and Waste Management: Ald Andre du Plessis from the Democratic Alliance

• MMC in charge of Community Safety: Clr Victor Letlhogonolo Moseki from Action SA

“To continually improve and remain accountable to residents and businesses, my newly appointed mayoral committee and I will undergo a system of rigorous performance assessment frequently,” said Campbell.

“These assessments will be conducted within the framework of outcome-based service delivery outputs, built on the commitment to fighting corruption and the unwavering purpose of serving the citizens of Ekurhuleni.

“We are already hard at work stabilising the institution and will soon begin to address the infrastructure backlogs. I will, in the coming days, convene a joint meeting with my mayoral committee and the heads of departments, as well as the city manager, to ensure our multi-party coalition’s vision is implemented and all our communities benefit.”

Campbell stated she has already addressed the long-standing Valuation Role matter with the city manager and the group chief financial officer and they have assured her the matter is urgently being addressed.

With the ongoing power outages gripping the City, Campbell said she will immediately task the MMC for Water, Sanitation and Energy to undertake an audit and meet with the relevant stakeholders to stabilise the electricity grid.

“I note the increased cases of vandalism and criminality against the City’s energy infrastructure and I condemn this in the strongest terms. I appeal to communities to report any acts of vandalism to the City’s call centre,” she said.

The mayor also encouraged all residents who are not yet vaccinated to go out and get the vaccine.

“As a City, we will be increasing the number of mobile clinics to our communities, as well as ramping up our vaccination drive,” she said.

“The hard work has already begun. This is the beginning of a new era.

“An era of selflessness and cooperative governance in Ekurhuleni.

“An era of commitment by a multi-party government to ensure honest and transparent governance. “This is an era of hope and delivery for all our residents.”
