Former suspect in Meyiwa murder continues to live in fear

Former Vosloorus car washer Zamokuhle Mbatha (38) said he still lives in fear seven years after he was arrested, charged and later cleared of charges for the murder of his soccer idol, Senzo Meyiwa, on October 24, 2014.

Mbatha told Kathorus MAIL he is will continue to hide his identity until the murder trial is completed and the suspect, or suspects, is convicted.

He said his greatest fear is that there are still people out there, most Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana supporters, who might still believe he is responsible for Meyiwa’s murder.

‘Catch Meyiwa’s killers and leave me in peace’

“I cannot expect everyone who has been following the case to understand and accept the facts presented by detectives,” explained Mbatha.

Mbatha was arrested at his home in Mzamo Acres, Vosloorus. His arrest was hailed as a “breakthrough” in the fight against crime.

That same night, Mbatha and 13 others were lined up for an ID parade at the Jeppe Police Station, where Mbatha was identified twice, while another person was identified once. This made him a suspect in the murder of Mweyiwa.

The next morning, Mbatha appeared in the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court and the case was postponed. But that same morning, Mbatha recalled being bundled into a private police vehicle and driven to his home. However, on arrival at his house, the police found the place packed with journalists and TV networks.

“An officer pushed my head down so they could not see me. They tried driving away as quick as they could while asking me if there was any other place where they could drop me off. I told them to take me to my parents’ house in another section of Vosloorus,” recalled Mbatha.

Upon his arrival at his parents’ home, Mbatha said he heard for the first time that the case against him had been dismissed.

“I was not even in court for this,” said Mbatha.

He said that was the last time he saw or ever heard from the police.

Asked about the latest rumours on social media, Mbatha refused to comment and said: “It’s none of his business.”

“I feel very sorry for the Meyiwa family to be emotionally dragged through something like this. They do not deserve it.”

Meanwhile, the NPA’s Lumka Mahanjana said the accused who have been appearing in court will appear again when the case resumes in April in the high court.
