Thokoza SAPS walks against GBV

Any form of violence against women and children is a direct violation of human rights.

Thokoza SAPS held gender-based violence (GBV) awareness campaign on November 20 at the police station.

The awareness campaign started with a march from the police station to Mpilisweni, Serena and Khumalo streets then back to the station.

Stakeholders who participated included the EMPD, Department of Health, Helping Hands, men’s forum, CPF, patrollers, GBV brigades, Sanco, Universal Church, youth desk, Powa, Nicri Qhakaza Mbali Yesizwe Group and Kofifi Girls.

All speakers emphasised working together to fight GBV.

Vispol commander Lieut-Col Bongani Dube addressed residents during the awareness campaign at Thokoza SAPS.

According to Thokoza SAPS media liaison officer Capt Buyisile Mvelase, during the event, men and women were urged to refrain from any form of crime against women and children.

Mvelase urged women and children to break the silence against domestic violence (DV).

Sister Moepye from Phola Park Clinic said DV affects everyone and any form of violence against women and children is a direct violation of human rights.

She further mentioned that our community is being robbed of bright future stars each year because of DV.

“We need to behave in a normality of human beings,” said Moepye.

A representative from the men’s forum Pastor Noko called on men to rise and help hold each other accountable for the attitude, unconscious behaviour and direct action that contribute to GBV.

The acting station commander, Lieut-Col Dube condemned GBV crimes.

“We may not know the victims but they are our responsibility,” said Dube.

He appealed to everyone to take commitment to do what they can to protect the future of women and children.
