Chris Hani museum not yet accessible to the public

According to the metro, the budget allocated for repairs and maintenance to the property for the museum was approximately R300 000.

The Chris Hani House Museum, in Dawn Park, which was scheduled to be opened in April, remains closed.

As previously reported, the metro confirmed to the Advertiser in December that the museum would officially be opened in April after renovations to the home were completed.

However, when the Advertiser visited the property on August 24, it was closed.

Two men arrived and asked if it was open and a security guard said it was not so they left disappointed that they could not experience the museum.

The security guard, also in the dark about why the site is not open to the public, told the Advertiser the home is guarded 24/7.

Outside the home is a board that clearly states the opening times but nowhere does it state the museum is not yet open to the public.

The Ekuhuleni metro purchased the property in 2016 as part of its programme to preserve the City’s history and heritage.

Hani’s widow, Limpo, officially handed over the keys to mayor Mzwandile Masina in November 2016 during a ceremony at the Hani property.

Metro spokesperson Zweli Dlamini confirmed that the museum is not yet officially open. He did not however confirm why or provide further information on when the Chris Hani House Museum will be opened for people
to visit.

Dlamini added that the budget allocated for repairs and maintenance to the property for the museum was approximately R300 000.

Some of the features or changes that have already been implemented at the museum include the installation of temporary exhibitions in the SACP room, a garage and dining room and the addition of a guardhouse.
