Boksburg Correctional Services conducts cleaning campaign in Katlehong

Some of the volunteers are out on parole.

The Boksburg Correctional Services (BCS) went out to lend a helping hand at Letsoho Shopping Complex in Katlehong on July 22.

The centre was badly affected by the recent looting of businesses that took the township and the country by storm a month ago.

The regional commissioner, Grace Molatedi, said the correctional services saw the need to recruit former prisoners to assist in helping the community and businesses.

Shops that were burnt down.

She said some of the people who volunteered were out on parole, adding part of their parole conditions includes participating in charity work.

“This is also an opportunity for them to redeem themselves in the community because they previously harmed the community through their actions. Now it is time for them to give back.

Volunteers were helping to clean Letsoho Shopping Complex on 22 July.

“They have been rehabilitated, so it is time for them to show they deserve a second chance,” said Molatedi.

The campaign was also supported by the Thokoza Police Station, Thokoza CPF, Heineken SA and community members.

Letsoho Shopping Complex in Katlehong was cleaned by ex-offenders, volunteers, SAPS, CPF and Boksburg Correctional Services.

The chairperson of uMpakathi Investment, Paul Koloti, said they have never witnessed this kind of destruction since they bought the shopping centre in 1998, adding he appreciated BCS for helping with the clean-up.

Molatedi said they were waiting for quantity surveyors to determine the costs for repairs.
