A place for young explorers

If you’ve got a child that likes to imagine and explore, Melville Koppies is the place for them.

“Just last week a young boy told one of the Melville Koppies guides how he was going to climb two mountains and find dinosaur eggs on the Koppies.

“He then drew his detailed plan in the sand. We’re convinced that he followed his plan and found just what he imagined,” said Jenny Grice, a Melville Koppies volunteer.

Visit soon and you might also see the tiny fairy flycatcher darting about in the bushes enjoying its comparatively warm sojourn in Joburg before it heads south back to Lesotho for the summer.

Or maybe you will spot the white-bellied sunbird feasting on the plentiful aloes currently flowering.

And if you have eagle eyes you might see the remains of stone walling exposed by the planned burning. These walls have been there since the 1300s when the first farmers inhabited the Koppies.

It’s not too late to spot the tiny fairy flycatcher darting about in the bushes.

Melville Koppies Central (Nature Reserve and Heritage Site) is open every Sunday from 08:00 to 11:30 and there is no need to prebook.

Cost is R80 for adults and R40 for children with season tickets for a year available at R500 per adult. These are not transferable.

All income is used for maintenance and security of the Koppies and you can park in secure parking opposite the entrance at Marks Park in Judith Road, Emmarentia.
