Cop arrested during police operation in Alberton

A police officer was among more than 30 arrested suspects during the O Kae Molao Operation at the R554 near New Market, R59 highway and Swartkoppies Road, Alberton, on June 24.

The operation, which began around 07:30, comprised various law enforcement agencies.

During the operation, police seized a white Toyota Corolla reported stolen in Vanderbijlpark.

According to acting Ekurhuleni district communications officer Capt Mega Ndobe, the driver of the Corolla told police officers he bought the vehicle from a Vereeniging police detective.

Ndobe confirmed the police detective was also arrested at the roadblock after he was called to come to Alberton.

A total of two vehicles were impounded for being tampered with.

A Nissan NP200 vehicle pounded by the police during the operation.

Police also visited several liquor outlets and second-hand goods shops to monitor compliance.

“A few liquor outlets owners were issued with fines for non-compliance and failing to comply with the Liquor Act,” said Ndobe.

“One suspect was arrested for possession of suspected stolen property, while the others were issued fines,” he added.

Ndobe explained that over 30 suspects were arrested on suspicion of being illegal immigrants. More than 10 traffic fines were issued to the motorists for failing to follow the Road Traffic Act.

All passengers travelling in public transport were searched as part of the operation.

Acting provincial commissioner Maj Gen Jimmy Mthombeni and Ekurhuleni district commissioner Maj Gen Anna Mateisi were impressed with the arrests, although they expected to seize illegal firearms.

More than 10 traffic fines were issued to motorists during the operation.
