Police arrest 150 suspects across the city during operation Okae Molao

Nineteen illegal immigrants were also arrested and 14 people were nabbed for contravening the Disaster Management Act.

Gauteng police arrested 150 people in Ekurhuleni during the Okae Molao operation on June 19.

The Gauteng acting provincial commissioner, Maj-Gen Tommy Mthombeni, was joined by Gauteng MEC for Community Safety Faith Mazibuko and Ekurhuleni acting district commissioner Brig Thembeka Gwebushe in Ivory Park, Thembisa.

They were joined by senior officers from various law-enforcement agencies to help fight crime and enforce level three lockdown regulations.

Nineteen illegal immigrants were also arrested and 14 people were nabbed for contravening the Disaster Management Act.

The operation started with a roadblock where six suspects were arrested for drinking and driving, while seven vehicles were impounded after they were found with tampered engines.

Other arrested suspects were found to have committed offences, including assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, possession of drugs, dealing in dagga, fraud, theft, reckless and negligent driving.

In a statement, the Gauteng provincial spokesperson, Capt Kay Makhubele, said the police also pounced on a group of young people having a party at 1:20 while they patrolled in Ivory Park. The youth, he added, disregarded the curfew, didn’t practise social distancing and some were not wearing masks.

According to Makhubele, the group ran in different directions when they saw the police.
