WATCH: Local NGO happy to receive wheelchair donations

VPD members replaced their old and uncomfortable wheelchairs with new ones, sponsored by Hollard.

Members of Vezabantu for People with Disabilities (VPD) NGO received a pair of new wheelchairs from the National Council of and People with Disabilities (NCPD) at Katlehong Skills Centre in Tsholo Section, on May 12.

This was made possible by Hollard.

The director of VPD, Abraham Mabogoane (44), appreciated the donation on behalf of the members.

“A wheelchair is like a car, which helps us move from one place to another. If you do not have it, it’s like your life is stuck, so we are very grateful for what they have done for us,” said Mabogoane.

“I wish they continue to help others because it means people with disabilities can be part of the community and socialise with everyone,” he said.

He added VPD could not afford the wheelchairs as they are expensive.

“Members of the NGO were so excited to receive new wheelchairs as there was a huge need for them. Our members will be able to move around,” he explained.

Ward 49 councillor City Makaleng was also present to support the event.

“I think NCPD is doing a good thing by helping VPD to replace its old wheelchairs with new ones,” said Makaleng.

He also encouraged people with disabilities to come to Katlehong Skills Centre to spend time with others instead of staying at home.

“Most disabled people are hidden by their families at home from when they are born. We are asking families to allow them to interact and socialise with others as this is healthy for them,” added Makaleng.

One of the beneficiaries, Lindokuhle Mtshali (28), thanked NCPD and encouraged it to continue helping others.
David Matlakala (46) of NCPD said they will continue to support the organisation where possible.

“We are here to fight for your rights. If you are being mistreated or struggling with anything, including grant money or other things that are important to you, we are a phone call away. Call us so that we can refer you to relevant people for assistance,” said Matlakala.

In its 80-year existence, the NCPD has strived to make South Africa create access to equal opportunities and rights for people with disabilities through advocating and facilitating social inclusion, access to and economic empowerment, contributing to and influencing government policies and changing attitudes through sensitisation and awareness programmes.
