Over 336 suspects arrested

Crime intelligence-driven information led officials to close two secondhand dealers and three liquor outlets.

The effort to curb various crime around Ekurhuleni resulted in the arrest of over 336 suspects during the Okae Molao Operation on March 17 to 18.

At least 308 suspects were arrested by the joint Ekurhuleni district detectives under Col Sello Sefoloshe on March 17.

Capt Mega Ndobe of Katlehong SAPS said detectives conducted the tracing of the suspects during the operation.

He said the suspects were arrested for business break-in, murder and attempted murder, public violence, kidnapping, house break-in and theft, illegal mining, fraud, the pointing of a firearm, possession of stolen property, possession of drugs, rape and sexual assault.

Other crimes included theft of a motor vehicle, malicious damage to property, armed robbery, intimidation, contempt of court and tampering with infrastructure.

The operation continued on March 18 in Kempton Park conducted by SAPS, EMPD, Gauteng Traffic Police, Department of Home Affairs, VCIU, Taxi Task Team and CPF board.

“Two Toyota Quantum vehicles were seized for being tampered with, two other vehicles were impounded for further investigation, and more than 100 traffic fines were issued valued at more than R30 000.

“One taxi commuter was arrested during the search for the possession of dagga, 19 undocumented persons were arrested and an inquiry was opened for further investigation,” said Ndobe.

The Ekurhuleni district commissioner Maj-Gen Vincent Leshabane and Maj-Gen Anna Mateisi commended law enforcement agencies for the great work, adding that the operation was well planned, well-executed and it made an impact.

Leshabane also thanked the public for giving the police crime-related information.

The arrested suspects are expected to appear in various magistrate’s courts soon.

Traffic fines valued at more than R30 000 were issued to motorists.
