Local lashes out about Alberton Post Office’s Covid-19 adherence

A concerned New Redruth resident has slammed Alberton Post Office for reportedly not adhering to Covid-19 regulations while interacting with the public.

The post office staff has been held responsible for allegedly not using masks despite coming into close contact with those visiting the facility.

This comes after the 37-year-old visited the facility on March 11 to collect her letter.

She said upon entering the post office, the security guard was not at the door and there was a large crowd standing outside having social discussions close to each other.

“The post office was filled with Sassa grant individuals and others. The security guard gives you a sanitiser and checks your temperature reading, but his eyes are elsewhere besides the actual recording. Also, behind the glass all the staff socialises closely with one another without any masks,” she said.

She told the RECORD this conduct puts so many people’s lives at risk since workers at the facility see no need to wear masks.

Post office communications officer Johan Kruger assured the RECORD the manager has taken up the matter with the employees at the Alberton Post Office.

“In terms of post office policy, the protocols to prevent the spread of Covid-19 must be strictly applied. Some of the incidents the reader mentioned are part of the steps we take to ensure social distancing – that is why customers use chairs that are spread apart,” he said.

Kruger also said if people stand in a queue, then social distances tend to gradually shrink.

He extended an apology for any inconvenience caused and thanked the complainant for bringing the matter to their attention.
