Criminals target the elderly with fake banknotes

Katlehong North SAPS issued a warning about two African male suspects scamming elderly and vulnerable people in the community.

According to Katlehong North SAPS spokesperson Lesetja Mathobela, the suspects target elderly and vulnerable people in Hlahats, Nhlapo, Skosana, Twala Gallo and Tshongwane sections by asking for change using a fake R100 note, while they take real money from unsuspecting victims.

“The suspects were making rounds in Katlehong. They drive a red VW Polo with an unknown registration number,” said Mathobela.

He warned that criminals may use any type of vehicle and urged the residents to be vigilant both in public spaces and at home.

“Housebreaking is still a problem in Katlehong. The community must look after their belongings and report any suspicious people. When leaving home, ensure all doors and windows are locked, including the garage door,” said Mathobela.

No arrests have been made yet. Police are appealing to residents and witnesses to report to the police station.

Anyone with information about scams, housebreaking, theft or people selling suspicious items must contact Katlehong North SAPS on 011 960 0020, 011 960 0001, 072 564 7446 or 0860 10111.
