Teachers welcome learners back to school

Parents and teachers had a hectic morning as they welcomed new and returning learners at Chivirikani Primary School to kickstart their academic year on February 15.

The parents were lined up with their youngsters at the school gates around 7.30am while teachers were allocating learners to their classes and ensuring Covid-19 regulations were adhered to.

All learners, teachers and parents wore their masks and the school’s Covid-19 officer sanitised everyone before entering school premises.

The deputy principal of Chivirikani Primary, Edward Maluleke, explained the school has prepared rotational groups for learners in all grades, excluding Grade One learners who are all expected to come in for the allocation of classrooms.

“So far we have several learners coming back, but we have a rotational programme whereby our learners in group A will attend for three days and give other groups a chance to attend for three days as well.

“In the foundation phase, we have another system whereby all Grade One learners are expected to come because these are new learners. We have to show them their classrooms and allocate them in groups,” said Maluleke.

He said they have measures in place to ensure children and teachers are safe during school hours.

The school has trained assistants in terms of orientation to Covid-19, a workshop for teachers so that everyone is up to speed about how they should handle the situation.

“Due to this pandemic, we are emphasising the basic safety requirements, like hand sanitisers, social distancing and wearing masks so that learners do not infect each other.

“We will be meeting with our learners after lunch break to remind them about the regulations. We have stickers that indicate the distance learners must be apart in and outside the classrooms,” said Maluleke.
