Police arrested a 25-year-old male suspect following a case of alleged robbery and rape of a 75-year-old woman in Suikerbosrand in September last year.
The suspect was arrested on February 2 at his workplace in Magagula Heights, South of Katlehong.
According to Heidelberg SAPS communications officer Capt Thivhulawi Tshilate, the information from the community and investigations by Det Sgt Happy Kubheka and Det Sgt Musa Maluleke led to the arrest of the suspect.
Tshilate explained the incident started when the suspect forced himself into the elderly lady’s house by breaking the door.
“The suspect overpowered the 74-year-old, raped her before robbing her of an undisclosed amount of cash and fled to Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve during the night,” said Tshilate.
Heidelberg SAPS station commander Col Phiwe Ndwandwe expressed appreciation to members of the service for arresting and bringing the perpetrator to book.
The suspect will appear in the Heidelberg Magistrate’s Court soon.
