Man (36) arrested for trying to deceive police

The suspect appeared in the Palm Ridge Magistrate's Court on January 19.

A 36-year-old man, who is an auto mechanic in Ncala Section, Katlehong, was arrested for allegedly committing perjury in Palm Ridge on January 17.

This follows him opening a false case of a carjacking at his home in Goba Section.

According to Katlehong North SAPS spokesperson Capt Lesetja Mathobela, the suspect alleged he was hijacked of a silver Mercedes-Benz which he rented from Avis.

“During the investigation, Sgt Thokoa, with the Trio Task Team, found the complainant was not hijacked nor robbed. They arrested him for reporting a false case. The police found the car stripped for parts in Palm Ridge,” said Mathobela.

The suspect appeared in the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court on January 19.

Katlehong SAPS station commander Col Raymond Bhuthelezi commended the members for the swift arrest of the suspect.

Police are appealing to the community to not report false cases as it constitutes a criminal offence and a waste of the State’s resources.
