The details of the memorial and funeral service of Phakathi will be communicated later after consultation with the family.

The ANC caucus in the City of Ekurhuleni has confirmed the death of Ward 63 councillor Nomsa Margaret Phakathi on January 17.

According to speaker at the ANC Chief Whip’s office Thabang Mashiyane, Phakathi died after a short illness.

“We take this moment of grief to convey our deepest and heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, comrades and many other structures of the community where she made her contribution to the development of people and its City,” said Mashiyane.

In a statement, Mashiyane described Phakathi as a down-to-earth person and a hardworking servant with a long history of community service.

“Sadly, she departed while we are still in the battle against an invisible enemy, the coronavirus. “However, we strongly believe her immense contribution will serve as a constant reminder to all of us that we must not shift from our core responsibility as public representatives to serve our people with diligence,” added Mashiyane.

Before Phakathi met her untimely death, she served as a member of section 79 oversight committees, including human settlement and economic development oversight committees.

“We wish to extend our gratitude to the family for having allowed us to share her life with the rest of the community of Ward 63, especially the City of Ekurhuleni.

“As we remember councillor Phakathi, we also want to urge our communities to adhere to regulations as stipulated by the government as we soldier on in the fight against Covid-19,” said Mashiyane.

The office of the Chief Whip in Ekurhuleni also urged the public to stay home, practise social distancing and frequently wash or sanitise their hands.

The details of the memorial and funeral service of Phakathi will be communicated later after consultation with the family.
