Pick n Pay Hero Awards programme rewarded a Grade Six learner from Maijibulo Primary School in Katlehong with Pick n Pay vouchers worth R5 000 and a certificate for honesty.
Relebogile Boshigo (12) found R500 in a dustbin and took it to her class teacher so that it can be returned to the rightful owner.
Boshigo said she was not expecting such a surprise.
“I don’t know how I can thank Pick n Pay and my teachers for this honesty award. I am going to use some of the money to buy myself clothes for Christmas,” said Boshigo.
Her mother Stella described her daughter as an introvert who prefers to stay indoors and focus on her academics.
“I must say I am very happy with her performance. She obtained level seven on all her subjects in the previous term,” said Boshigo.
The Grade Six class teacher Mkhosi Cele said Boshigo deserved to win because she’s not only an honest person but she is also a responsible child.

“She takes care of everything and ensures that all her classmates sanitise after each lesson and wears their masks whenever the teacher is not in the classroom,” said Cele.
Pick n Pay School Club liaison officer Lulama Qwenga said Pick n Pay Hero Awards programme aims to promote the act of kindness and to support South African educators and learners with content and experiences that are relevant, exciting and stimulating for enhanced learning to uplift communities.
Maijibulo Primary School marks their second victory in the competition following the previous win for sportsmanship in the team player category back in 2015.
Other categories include courage, selflessness, kindness or caring, respectfulness and environmental awareness.
