Department of Safety donates 400 000 disposal masks to SAPS

Although the police will be hard at work during the festive season, Buthelezi warned that people should avoid walking alone at night.

The local CPF and SAPS will be protected as much as possible from Covid-19 while conducting their day-to-day services during the busiest month of the year, following a donation of two boxes containing 400 000 disposal masks at Katlehong North SAPS on November 30.

CPF chairperson Otto Sebeko said they are thankful to the Department of Safety as they aim to prevent the spread of Covid-19. He added they will share the disposal masks with members of the SAPS and public.

“We will also share the masks with everyone who is arrested and taken to the police station to make statements, as they usually do not have masks. We require everyone who enters our premises to wear a mask,” said Sibeko.

Katlehong North SAPS spokesperson Capt Lesetja Mathobela urged the public to continue following safety precautions and to save lives by avoiding the spread of the virus.

Station commander of Katlehong SAPS Col Raymond Buthelezi encouraged officers to wear masks and exercise precaution while on duty. He also thanked the Department of Safety and all the organisations working with the police to fight crime.

Although the police will be hard at work during the festive season, Buthelezi warned that people should avoid walking alone at night.

“We had an incident of rape where the suspects forced the victim inside a car and drove off with her. “The world suffers a lot, not only because of the violence but also because of the silence as victims are reluctant to open criminal cases against perpetrators. Report all criminal activities that take place in your area.

“Any form of abuse directed towards women and children will not be tolerated and will be given the attention it deserves,” said Buthelezi.

To avoid Covid-19 infections:

• Wear a mask at all times while in the public space.

• Use an alcohol-based hand sanitiser.

• Avoid close contact with people who are infected.

• Cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze with a flexed elbow or a tissue, then dispose the tissue in a dustbin.

• Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces with water and bleach or an alcohol-based sanitiser.

• Avoid contact with wild animals (alive or dead).

• Remain vigilant and adopt good personal hygiene practices.
