Mom (58) has son arrested for assault

The man accused of assaulting his mother has had run-ins with the law before, including common assault and malicious damage to property

A 58-year-old woman from Ramaphosa informal settlement became emotional while speaking to the Advertiser about the abuse she suffered, allegedly at the hands of her son.

In January, the mother opened a case of assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH) against her son at the Reiger Park SAPS.

Her alleged abusive 30-year-old son was subsequently arrested in February, and has made several court appearances in the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court. He has remained in custody and will be returning to court on October 27.

According to the Reiger Park SAPS spokesperson, Const Zanele Motaung, the woman was at home cooking rice when her son arrived and told his mother he doesn’t want rice and that he wanted to cook pap.

The mother apparently told her son he can’t cook pap because she already started cooking rice.

“It is alleged the suspect started swearing at her while mentioning that at the end of the month she won’t get her rent money from tenants because he was going to take it. The son allegedly took out a knife and stabbed his mother in the forehead. The injured mother was rushed to hospital,” Motaung said.

Previous convictions
According to the police, in 2012 the suspect was convicted of common assault after an attack on his mother and spent six months in jail.

In 2013, he was found guilty of malicious damage to property after he damaged his mother’s furniture and cellphone.

The devastated mother told the Advertiser since her son started abusing her, she has had sleepless nights.

The Reiger Park Victim Support Centre said it will make its services available to the abused mother.
