Eden Park artist wants to bring positivity with his art
"Drawing comes naturally to me. I draw what I feel and what I think,” he said.
What simply seemed to be an 11-year-old’s rebelliousness, turned out to being an opportunity for him to discover his talent at a young age.
At 11 years old, Biojn van Vooren (21) realised he had a gift for drawing, which enabled him to express his emotions. The Eden Park artist wants to share his art skills with his community, teaching both young and old how to draw and paint.
“At a young age I had anger issues. After seeing a psychologist, I was advised to do what I loved most. At one stage I became angry at my family, I then decided to draw cartoons. That’s when I discovered I could actually draw,” he said.
Growing up he saw a need to focus more on his art, which meant he needed to do more research about his craft.
“At about age 15, I had a better understanding about this. I made it a norm to draw whenever I was angry or happy. I also found inspiration from artist Leonardo da Vinci and my uncle Anver Mohammed, who is also an artist,” said Biojn.
His craft
As a learner at Bracken High School, he decided to take visual art as a subject.
“School taught me a lot about what I needed to know, such as texture, mediums and style. The moment I saw that I could draw, I enjoyed it a lot. Drawing comes naturally to me. I draw what I feel and what I think,” he said.
Biojn later realised his community needed to be empowered and familiarised with art.
“Upon completing matric, I realised the community did not have people who could improve their creative dreams. It has always been my dream to own an art studio and be an art teacher because I feel it would be a walk in the park. I’m here to dig into their creative side of thinking,” he said.
He told the RECORD he could benefit his community by making them realise their artistic talents.
Biojn, also a father of a five-month-old baby, described himself as an active community member who cares about his community.
“I can empower my community. Other talented people can assist. I’ve also spoken to a teacher at one of the high schools and I’m in talks with another school in order to assist learners,” he said.
