Gauteng Police nab suspects for contravention of Covid-19 regulations offences

The office of the Provincial Commissioner of SAPS has recorded an alarming number of arrests on direct contravention of the Disaster Management lockdown regulations.

The office of the Provincial Commissioner of SAPS has recorded an alarming number of arrests in direct contravention of the Disaster Management lockdown regulations.

These arrests totaled over 150 suspects who were arrested in Ekurhuleni, some of whom were also arrested for contravention of the Disaster Management Act.

According to Brig Mathapelo Peters of Gauteng SAPS, two suspects were arrested in Brackendowns for selling liquor in contravention of the regulations.

“Police confiscated a large consignment of liquor from the premises. In Ekurhuleni, others were nabbed for crimes that included possession of unlicensed firearms, possession of drugs, dealing in dagga, possession of police uniform and assault,” she said.

She said Gauteng Provincial Commissioner, Lt Gen Elias Mawela strongly warned bereaved families to work with the police towards adhering to the lockdown regulations.

“He said resources deployed by security forces to enforce lockdown regulations at funerals should be used optimally in the prevention and combatting of serious crimes. He reiterated the call for greater personal care and responsibility as the Province responds to and deals with an escalating Covid-19 infection rate,” said Peters.
