Nineteen arrested in Katlehong

Police operations yield results in the Katlehong precinct.

Katlehong police continue to clamp down on community members contravening the Disaster Management Act (Covid-19 Act).

“We hold daily operations within our precinct to ensure residents abide by the rules and regulations of the lockdown,” explained Capt Mega Ndobe, communications officer for the Katlehong police.

Police arrested 19 suspects during operations held last Monday and Tuesday.

Eleven were arrested for the Act.

“Their infringements included operating spaza shops and selling goods without a valid permit and walking on the street aimlessly,” said Ndobe.

The other suspects were charged with various offences.

These included theft, domestic violence, intimidation, assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm and shoplifting.

Katlehong SAPS acting station commander Col Phakama Gcaza thanked everyone who contributed to the arrests.

She appealed to children and youths to remain at home during the lockdown.

“Parents need to make sure that their children stay home,” she said.

“Even children who are found on the street will be arrested and their parents will be held accountable. It is your responsibility to protect your children.”

She reminded the community that no one is allowed to be on the streets except those working essential duties, or those going to the shops for essential items.

All of the arrested suspects were held at the Katlehong Police Station pending their appearance in the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court.
