Katlehong SAPS pounce on criminals during Easter weekend

The Katlehong police shared their weekend arrest statistics.

The Easter weekend was busy for the Katlehong police.

Officers from the Katlehong police’s Crime Prevention Unit, detectives from the Katlehong Police Station, members of the EMPD and members of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) took to the streets of Katlehong in several weekend operations.

The operations were held throughout the precinct between April 9 and 13, the third weekend during lockdown, and led to the arrest of 61 suspects.

This is according to the latest arrest statistics released by the Katlehong Police Station.

A number of suspects were arrested for contravening the Disaster Management Act (Covid-19 Act).

“The community is warned to stay indoors,” said Capt Mega Ndobe, communications officer for the Katlehong police.

“They do not want to find themselves as one of the suspects arrested for contravening the Disaster Management Act (Covid-19 Act).

“We do not want to arrest residents, but we will ensure they comply with the regulations.

“Some of the contraventions included operating a tuck shop without a valid permit, selling alcohol and walking on the street aimlessly.”

Other suspects were charged with various offences.

Charges included attempted murder, house robbery, common assault, domestic violence, malicious damage to property, shoplifting and illegal immigrants.

All of the arrested suspects were held at the Katlehong Police Station pending their appearance in the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court.

Katlehong SAPS acting station commander Col Phakama Gcaza thanked everyone who contributed to the arrests.

She further encouraged the community to stay indoors and to follow the rules and regulations.

“People are encouraged to stay indoors, so that we fight this Covid-19 together,” she said.
