Two men arrested for statutory rape

Primrose police arrested two men each on a charge of statutory rape in Primrose.

Primrose police recently arrested two men, aged 26 and 27 years old respectively, on a charge of statutory rape.

The arrests were made after the complainant, the mother of the alleged 14-year-old victim, opened a case at the Primrose Police Station.

“The woman told officers she had sent her daughter outside to fetch a washing basin,” said Sgt Styles Maome, communications officer for the Primrose police.

“She reportedly returned with the basin and then quickly left the house again.

“Her daughter was gone for some time and when she returned her mother, who was concerned, began questioning her.”

During the questioning the young girl told her mother she had been with the 26-year-old suspect.

“She alleged that they had had sex and he had given her R20 to not tell anyone,” explained Maome.

“She further alleged that he was not the only man she had sex with. She claimed she had also had sex with the 27-year-old suspect and he too had paid her R20 to remain silent.”

The two men were traced and arrested.

“We remind the community that a child under the age of 16 cannot give consent to have sex,” said Maome.

“Should anyone have sex with a child below the age of 16 they will be arrested and charged with statutory rape.”

Both suspects appeared in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court, where their cases were postponed for plea and trial.
