Man arrested for lying under oath

A 45-year-old male suspect was arrested on March 12 for allegedly making a false statement in the Zonkizizwe SAPS precinct while under oath.

Communications officer at Zonkizizwe SAPS Sgt Rufus Tema said the man lied about being hijacked on the Johannesburg N3 on-ramp.

“According to the statement made by the suspect, he was hijacked of his truck and trailer and was later dumped in Olifantsfontein where he opened a case docket.

“The initial intensive investigation, conducted by Zonkizizwe Intelligent Unit, revealed some discrepancies in the suspect’s statement to which he could not give a satisfactory explanation,” said Tema.

Tema said the suspect was then arrested for perjury and is expected to appear in Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court soon.

The station commander of Zonkizizwe SAPS, Lieut Col Munaf Ismail, has commended the diligent work done by the police and also warned complainants against giving false statements to the police.

“It is not only a waste of time and state resources, but also a criminal offence to make false statement under oath. We won’t hesitate to arrest those who deliberately mislead the police,” Ismail warned the public.
