Suspect arrested while breaking into a policeman’s house

Sgt Edward Mukosi from Vosloorus SAPS said on December 18, 2019, he went to work night shift and left his house in Extension 16 locked as usual.

He said when he returned home the following morning at about 6am, he found a spade and a digging fork by the gate.

“The main gate was locked. As I move closer to the house I found the bugler door was broken open. I walked inside the house to find my bags packed full of clothes and other accessories. I then realised there was someone in my bedroom packing things inside the bags.

“I went to check who it was and found the suspect, Themba Nkwanyana (29) from Dindela Section in Vosloorus, alone in my bedroom. I asked him what he was doing. He panicked and didn’t know what to say. He said he was asked by his friend to come to my house. I ordered him to lie down on the ground. I cuffed him and brought him to the Vosloorus Police Station,” said Mukosi.

He said a case of house break-in and theft was opened on the same day and Nkwanyana was charged.

“He appeared in court the same day of the arrest and the case was postponed. The docket was handed over to Det Sgt Nhlanhla Tshabalala for investigation.

“On January 31, he was sentenced to 12 years in prison,” said Mukosi.

Mukosi said he is satisfied with the sentence.

“I am happy because there are a lot of house break-ins in the township. If we can put one suspect behind bars it will send a message to others who are still thinking of committing similar crimes that the police will not rest until they put you behind bars,” Mukosi said.

Communications officer at Vosloorus SAPS Capt Piet Rossouw said the township is experiencing a lot of house break-ins.

“Every arrest and sentencing made makes a difference in the community,” Rossouw said.
