Police school search aims to curb violence in schools

Germiston SAPS members, along with other stakeholders, conducted two school searches.

To combat the rise of violence in schools, officers from the Germiston Police Station together with other stakeholders recently carried out searches at Afrikaanse Hoërskool Germiston and Galway Primary School.

The Germiston SAPS was assisted by Social Crime Prevention Unit coordinators from different police stations in the Ekurhuleni West SAPS district (Alberton, Thokoza, Eden Park, Boksburg and Dawn Park), as well as EMPD members, officers from Boksburg Correctional Services, members of the Department of Community Safety, the EMPD K9 Unit and the Department of Education.

“At Afrikaanse Hoërskool Germiston, we searched seven classrooms, with a total of 261 learners,” explained Const Maxwell Mabunda, communications officer for the Germiston police.

“We confiscated a knife and two boxes of cigarettes from learners during the search.”

At Galway, the team searched eight classrooms.

“We searched four Grade Six classes and four Grade Seven classes, with a total of 300 learners,” Mabunda said.

“Nothing was found during the search.”

Moving forward, the Germiston SAPS plans to hold more searches and seizure operations in the schools within their precinct.

“We also plan to visit our schools to educate learners on what they can and cannot have at school and what the consequences are of having the wrong things at school,” said Mabunda.
