Beware when drinking and driving

It is always advisable to have a designated driver to avoid being arrested for driving under the influence.

If you are planning on having a night out on the town, where alcohol will be consumed, it is always advisable to have a designated driver to avoid being arrested for driving under the influence.

Kobeli Mokheseng, acting chief superintendent and spokesperson for the EMPD, said that during a roadblock if they suspect that someone has been drinking, they will be stopped.

“If the driver has a professional driver’s licence their alcohol blood levels cannot be above 0.02g/100ml,” he said.

However, he said, that should the level be slightly above the limit, it is up to the discretion of the officer whether or not to arrest the driver or issue a verbal warning.

According to Mokheseng, should the offending driver possess a regular driver’s licence their alcohol blood level cannot exceed 0.05mg/100ml.

He added that if the alcohol levels are a bit higher, but the driver is in control of the vehicle and is not driving erratically, the officer again has the option of issuing a warning or arresting the driver.
