‘Incredible Happenings Funeral Parlour failed my family’

This led to them borrowing money from a loan shark in order to bury her uncle, Zachariah Mofokeng.

Tshidi Mofokeng from Katlehong, whose grandmother Alinah Mofokeng is a member of the Incredible Happenings Funeral Parlour, has raised claims about the funeral parlour’s late payment of the policy.

Tshidi said after her uncle died on December 15 last year, they claimed from the funeral parlour on December 19.

“We brought all the required documentation. Mokgadi Motsoeneng, who runs the funeral parlour, promised they were going to pay out 75 per cent of R15 000 as agreed upon within two days, which would have been December 21. After seeing that the money wasn’t being deposited into our account, we decided to borrow the money from a local loan shark so we could continue with the funeral arrangements to bury our uncle the following day.

“We returned to the funeral parlour’s office the following day, but they were closed. On December 24, we returned again and sat there from 10am until 2pm. One of the employees told us the claim will be completed in January, since there were delays on December claims.

“This was breach of contract. The contract stipulates the claims will be paid out within two days. The employee told us to go back home since Motsoeneng would only be returning later that day,” said Tshidi.

She said they refused to go back home and waited for Motsoeneng instead.

“On her arrival, we told her we have already borrowed the money from the loan shark and he wants it back with interest. Motsoeneng told us we were going to get the money on Christmas Day by noon. The money was not paid into our account. We sent Motsoeneng an SMS just after 1pm, reminding her that we did not enjoy Christmas and that the loan shark was giving us a hard time because he wants the money back.

“They decided to pay us the money in different amounts, all on Christmas Day. The first amount of about R800 was paid at around 4pm, and the rest of the small amounts during the day until a total of R10 000 was received, instead of the R12 550 we were expecting. They promised to pay the remaining R2 250 at the end of January,” Tshidi said.

She said this made her feel better as they were able to pay the loan shark his R7 000 with interest. The remaining R2 250 has still not been paid out.

“The last time I called Motsoeneng to ask for clarity on the delay of payment of the remaining amount, she did not pick up the phone. So I sent her an SMS saying I was going to take further steps,” said Tshidi.

Kathorus MAIL tried contacting Motsoeneng after hearing Tshidi’s side of the story on February 17, but could not reach her. One February 19 she answered.

During the short telephonic conversation she emphasised that she was not willing to comment on the matter.

“I have nothing to say to you since I have already spoken with the family’s representatives about this matter,” said Motsoeneng, who eventually cut the call.

We tried contacting Motsoeneng again, but she did not answer.
