Alafang hosts Afcko tournament at Sam Ntuli

African Full Contact Karate Organisation (Afcko) started the year in full force as one of their affiliates, Alafang Dojo, hosted the Kyokunshinkan Karate Tournament 2020 at the Sam Ntuli Sports Complex on February 15.

In attendance were the following dojos: Sijabulile, Tsakane, Abram Hlophe, North-West University, Vaal University of Technology, Kyokushinkan IKO1 Midrand, Baker, Shinkyokushin K1, Sebokeng, Zakhariya Park, Mpontsheng, Thokoza, and KwaManzini Enshin.

Sensei Thabo Mbatha, the host, was very impressed with the level of full-contact karate in South Africa.

“This shows the day-to-day training and commitment of all full-contact karate instructors in our country. We held a Judges’ Refresher Course a week before the tournament to make sure our officials are up to date with the latest rules of full-contact karate around the world,” said Mbatha.

Afkco president Shihan Thulane Master Sibisi said he was very happy to see more females participating in this tournament.

“With the challenges that our country is faced with, including gender-based violence, we hope karate will contribute towards women developing some self-defense skills so they can defend themselves.

“It is up to us as communities to support initiatives that teach us to respect our women. We also want the spirit of ubuntu to return through full-contact karate in Africa,” said Sibisi.

He pleaded with all karatekas who were present at the ceremony not to allow world politics to cause divisions among them.
